In Washington, along the Anacostia River mainstem there is a Boathouse Row, where you’ll find many historic boathouses, such as the nation’s oldest African American yacht club from 1945, when Lewis T. Green made history in Anacostia Park when he created the Seafarers Yacht Club.
The Yacht Club is still thriving to this day and was an early advocate for stewarding the river. However, many other boats have been abandoned since the 1990s unfortunately.
The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and Anacostia Riverkeeper project team are removing up to 33 abandoned and derelict vessels from the marina in Washington D.C. and Maryland.
