The lake’s bacteria and microbes feed on carbon that seawater left behind thousands of years ago, In 2018, Paleoglaciologist Ryan Venturelli explored the area with a team of about 30 scientists to West Antarctica.

Imagine microbes that survive in lakes below Antarctica’s ice sheet.

Scientists used a special hot-water drill to carve this hole through a kilometer of ice to reach the buried Lake Mercer in West Antarctica.
